Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not only the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
