British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
