The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
