Individuals Coming Off Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying these treatments need to be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
