Pentagon Report Concludes Hegseth Put Troops in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing secret information in a private Signal group, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in dispute included particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This chat came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other individuals in the group allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not approved for transmitting classified information.

Serious Threat to Troops

The internal investigation determined that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the material he distributed, though it was not specified whether he actually exercised that authority.

Secretary's Response

The source said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only shared information that would not have risked lives or compromised the mission. He further stated that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to Congress. An unclassified version is anticipated to be made public in the coming days.
