This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a dare for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a deep contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story starts when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple face the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
