Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the right to question certain decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
